Most people would love to improve their lives in some way. The thought of accomplishing something amazing is a great idea to a lot of people, but when it’s time to actually do something about it they are stopped dead in their tracks by fear and self-doubt. Ironically even people who live large and are very successful by most folk’s standard experience fear and sometimes paralyzing fear. In this article, I’m going to share some great ways to help you to get over the challenge of fear and self-doubt.

One thing to be well aware of is that most people doubt themselves from time to time. Many people we consider to be quite successful deal with fears and self-doubt. I remember watching an interview with the singer Adele on the CBS program 60 minutes. At the time she was one of the hottest singers on the music scene, and she’s still phenomenal. She said to Anderson Cooper that she gets extremely nervous before a performance, sometimes to the point of vomiting. The difference between her and people who don’t live out their dreams, is she simply walked through the fear right into her greatness on the stage. She refused to let fear control her life.

Courage is the willingness to act in spite of fear.

Remember that courage is not the absence of fear; it’s the willingness to act in spite of the fear. It is so easy to fall into the false belief that we have to actually do something about how we happen to feel. The truth is that we do not have to actually upon our feelings. What can sometimes be useful is to simply acknowledge the feeling and then move on, the same way Adele does before each show. In the case of fear and self-doubt it is unnecessary to fight against it. Oftentimes resisting or fighting against something can amplify it. So, the next time you doubt yourself or feel fear, consider just recognizing the feeling, and then just moving on.

In nearly every circumstance fear is a product of our imagination. We encounter a situation that may be difficult, and then we make up all kinds of stories in our head about how awful things will turn out. When you’re afraid, try to be aware of the feeling. Be present with it, as if you are out of your body (I know this may seem odd) looking down on yourself. Ask yourself if there is a realistic chance that things may go badly. If the answer is yes, use your creative power (and yes you do have it) to imagine how you can make the best of the situation, and overcome the challenge before you.

When you are afraid and especially when you doubt yourself, you are operating under the false impression that you are incapable of rising to the challenge you’re confronted with. The truth is that all the power of the universe is at your disposal, and to utilize it all you have to do is believe that you can. If you don’t currently have this empowering belief, you may wonder how you can get it. Motivation speaker and spiritual thinker Ester Hicks says, “A belief is a thought that you keep on thinking”. So, if you want to develop any belief, all you have to do is keep thinking the thought, and over time you will indeed believe.

Eventually belief turns into conviction. At this point creativity will open its doors to you. You’ll see possibilities that may not have occurred to you in the past. Belief and conviction can either confirm your fear or if used correctly can destroy fear and self-doubt. Even if it’s only for a short while at first, open your mind to positive possibilities. The more you focus on solutions to challenges and less on the challenges themselves the greater your personal power will become. Here’s an ironic truth – fear and self-doubt are cowards. When you stand up to them, they scurry away to find some other poor sucker. I am convinced that you have within you the energy and amazing capability to rise to any challenge and over come all fear and self-doubt. Trust me…I wouldn’t steer you wrong.
